Default Printer won't print after cancelling a print job

Hello ...

I had printed out a couple of jobs and decided to cancel the
last print job, right in the middle of the job. I had to manually
pull the sheet of paper out of the printer. Then when I tried
to print again, the next job would not print.

The way I cancelled the job was:
I fired up KJobViewer, put the job on 'Hold' ( to bring things to a
halt ) and then 'Remove' the job. As I said, now nothing will print.

Anyone have any suggestions ?

advTHANKSance

Paul

I'd suggest being a little more sure that you really want to print
something, before you print it. Don't cancel the print jobs...

Thanks for the reply Dan. I know that with VMS we could stop the print
queue, remove a job and then restart the print queue and all was well.
I know it can be done in UNIX (Ultrix) but was not sure about how. So
I thought that I was just doing something similar via KJobViewer.

Besides "don't do it", do you have any suggestions on what I might now
do to get print capability back ?

Paul

Go into Control Centre > Peripherals > Printers > Administrator Mode >
Printers in the tool bars > Drop down Menu > Start/Stop printer and restart
printer. Its a KDE question and not a slackware one.

Just in case try lpq and lprm.

Would this be an HP printer by any chance? I have also encountered a
strange problem that seem to be a cups and postscript translation
related.

On my second PC there is an old HP 500C that is used as a backup in case
my 5440 gets jammed or runs out of ink.

Anyway it has always been a hassle if a print job failed or was
cancelled. I'd have to turn it off, run lprm and hand delete all related
entries in /var/log/cup and /var/spool/cups and then reboot.

The failed print job seems to "confuse" the printer and print system.

I upgraded that machine from 10.2 to 11 and now it won't print at all.
Of course if I boot 'doze it prints perfectly.

I'm considering removing hpijs and rebuilding it from source. I did that
once before and cured a similar strange problem.

Do what Two Ravens suggested, and/or perhaps cycle the power on the
printer.

Do a lpq -a to see the status of the printers and remove (with lprm) any
jobs you see. If see that the printer is "disabled" reenable it
(/usr/bin/enable <printer>). It is also possible that the printer itself
is a bit confused; in that case just switch off the printer and switch
it on again.

Sincerely thankful

Thanks Two Ravens. I checked out your solution after reading and
applying Olives suggestion which freed things up.

I will take your advice and be sure I want to print before sending the
job to the printer ( but if I make the same mistake, I will take your
second advise and try Control Centre > Peripherals > Printers > etc .. )

Sincere thanks,

Paul

I think you may be conflating my identity with that of Dan C, but I don't
suppose that either of us will mind.
