I have installed slackware 12.1,but kmail doesn't work, throwing up
the above message.Anyone any ideas ,what's causing this?

If I remember well, I had this error too, some time ago.

The solution was to install a library, maybe 'cyrus-sasl'? But I'm not
sure wether that's the right one.

'cyrus-sasl' says:

"cyrus-sasl (Simple Authentication and Security Layer)

What error messages do you get when you start kmail from the Konsole?
