| Ok I've tried all I can think of as well as anything I could find with google. Has anyone been able to get an SB 128PCI sound card to work with Slack-9.1? I have tried getting it to work with the stock kernel as well as a custom compiled kernel with & without module support, and still no luck. Also has anyone else noticed a little bit of a delay when using gnome-terminal and either typing or using SHIFT+PAGEUP/DOWN to scroll? -- Confucius: He who play in root, eventually kill tree. What modules have you tried? Is your card detected at boot? In older (non-hotplug) versions of Slack, I was able to get the card working by doing a 'modprobe es1371'. Some people needed to load es1370 instead with this card. In 9.1 with hotplugging, this card is detected automatically for me. It looks like the snd-ens1371 module is loaded for this card. Maybe modprobing that will work for you? BTW sound is mute by default in 9.1. You can use alsmixer to set the volume want and then alsactl store for them to be saved for next boot. FWIW, alsamixer says this about about my SB 128PCI. Card: Ensoniq AudioPCI Chip: Cirrus Logic CS4297A rev 3 -- Mark Hill <usenet@mark.ukfsn.org> The address in the From: line is not read |

Is your card detected at boot? It uses the es1370 module. When I run alsaconf I get an error message that says "No PnP or PCI card found" which is strange since it is a PCI card. I'm beginning to think I should have stayed with Slack-9.0 until all the bugs were worked out. > FWIW, alsamixer says this about about my SB 128PCI. > Card: Ensoniq AudioPCI > Chip: Cirrus Logic CS4297A rev 3 When I run "alsamixer" I get the error message below. ---------------------- alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device ------------------------ It appears that something is screwed up somewhere. The card works if I boot into Slack-9.0 so it isn't a defective card. -- Confucius: He who play in root, eventually kill tree. | BTW when I run lspci the card is found and listed as: 00:14.0 Multimedia audio controller: Ensoniq ES1370 [AudioPCI] (rev 01) -- Confucius: He who play in root, eventually kill tree. If I recall, doing a modprobe -r soundcore esssolo1 prior to running alsaconf fixed things. I had to add the appropriate line to etc/hotplug/blacklist so that the OSS module wouldn't be reloaded in future. (The line was in the blacklist.new file I just copied it over.) When I run alsaconf I get an error FWIW, that *really* doesn't look like an alsa module name. rob@dell rob $ lsmod | grep snd snd_intel8x0 31684 0 snd_ac97_codec 54020 1 snd_intel8x0 snd_mpu401_uart 7808 1 snd_intel8x0 snd_rawmidi 25088 1 snd_mpu401_uart snd_seq_device 8452 1 snd_rawmidi snd_pcm_oss 51972 0 snd_pcm 99072 2 snd_intel8x0,snd_pcm_oss snd_page_alloc 12036 2 snd_intel8x0,snd_pcm snd_timer 25984 1 snd_pcm snd_mixer_oss 19200 1 snd_pcm_oss snd 52356 9 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_mpu401_uart,snd_ra wmidi,snd_seq_device,snd_pcm_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer ,snd_mixer_oss soundcore 9536 1 snd See how they all start with snd_? It looks (to me, anyway) like you're loading up an OSS module and trying to treat it as an alsa module. Check out the Soundcard Matrix for info on getting your card working with Alsa at www.alsa-project.org. Work from there... or revert back to OSS modules and use the OSS utilities instead of the Alsa utilities. -- Rob | If not safe, Email and Jabber: | one can never be free. athlonrob at axpr dot net | -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.2 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE/ggKQhm6KEoOOAe0RAqr9AJ9sd5HrEVj+D9Yhm/1KHWbqAspHmACaA+Hh Hj85ULxFZ6E42qUPttWD1fk= =us1r -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- |

| Thanks to all who replied. I ended up removing alsa and making a SlackBuild script out of the "esound.build" script and recompiling esound so now I have sound again. I'm still at a loss as to why I was getting the error messages though. When I ran alsaconf I got this one: No PnP or PCI card found When I ran alsamixer I got this one: alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device -- Confucius: He who play in root, eventually kill tree.
