Default Setting up scanner with kernel 2.6.7

well for some reason, the scanner thread disapeared form pan.
Wanted to let anyone who cared i got my scanner working. It's not udev.
Scanners cannot be setup through udev as there is no longer a scanner
kernel module (in kernels >= 2.6 not sure of the exact version the scanner
module was removed 2.6.4 i think) I reinstalled sane and all is well. I
had to make epson.conf +x (not sure if this was necessary).

One question i still have is about perms.
ls -l /proc/bus/usb/004 (my scanner is libusb:004:005)
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root scanner 50 2004-09-24 12:56 005*
0777 is the only way user can access the scanner. I am part of the scanner
group so i thought that 0660 would be the correct perms as stated in
/etc/hotplug/usb/libusbscanner, but unless i have 0777 user has no acces
to the scanner.
Any ideas about this?
