Nice review, I do have few comments though, based on a single test upgrade of a non critical server. slapt-get dist upgrades, tells you that you need to upgrade those 3 key packages first, this has worked flawlessly for several version upgrades, the only thing that caught me out was the tcpip splitting, which wasn't an issue until I removed Pats list of "to be removed old packages", Slapt-get is not (rightfully) intelligent enough to know the splitting up of tcpip and the need to install the net-tools package plus the several other netkit packages that make up what used to be there. Now, unrelated to the article, but might be of interest to others... As I've only done this upgrade on one server so far ,I can't tell if it will happen on all but with many extra perl mods and updates from CPAN admins are forever installing to keep scripts happy, I found I had the infamous gzipopen undefined blah at line 57xx error, that simply needed a ' find /usr/lib/perl5 -name Zlib.pm -exec rm {}\;' and re running of CPAN before it (or perl -MCPAN) could do anything usefull. Lastly, we have been using 2.6 kernel for a while, custom built, it is not an error as everything worked just perfect, just new LILO changes warning about device-mapper, recompiled that option into the kernel ( device drivers -> multi-device support ), then rebooted, warning gone. That server has been running for over 24 hours now and appears as stable as any other. -- Cheers Res -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.7 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFGkW1jsWhAmSIQh7MRArA3AJ9WTmJ42kdc9HHE96re8i o/m4+9gACfVOFi q+8/8Mc9AX+clr7VMNHP8JE= =LjbH -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- |

As far as I can judge, this warning of lilo is harmless, and one may ignore it if device-mapper is not needed. Cheers, Mikhail |

Yes, it is harmless, just annoying, if I leave it there one of the juniors might panic and annoy me in the middle of the night so I rather get rid of it -- Cheers Res -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.7 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFGkeL1sWhAmSIQh7MRAsEYAJ9H1oi7/tCt5Q5YekHfHcd2dq1ELgCgpphR 65DPEilqC9aUT1VOo2D6cuQ= =4Obs -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- |
