| I've just installed Slackware 7.0 on my Dell Optiplex GX110 in a dual-boot setup with Windows 98SE on the other partition. It's been working fine, up until the following. I was in the process of running XF86Setup when I ran into a snag at the mouse page; I couldn't get the mouse to respond. I tried all the mouse protocols from the list, but nothing. I didn't go through the whole list of Mouse Devices due to time, but I figured I'd ask this question in here: is there anything specific off the list I should be looking to go for? If this means anything, the mouse works fine when Win98SE is booted up. Sorry, that's probably totally irrelevant - I'm a newb, but I'm looking to become a Slack Monster. Hope someone in here can help! |

Unfortunately, it'd be necessary to know what type/model mouse you were using. And is it serial? ps/2? USB? I also have a Dell Optiplex (a GX100). Question: Is your mouse a ps/2 mouse? Mine is. Apparantly ANY brand of ps/2 mouse will work, as it seems the protocol is related more to which port is used as opposed to the make of the mouse (I've plugged at least three different ps/2 mice in and all have worked both in text mode as well as in X). [garbanzo:/etc/X11]$ less XF86Config .... .... Section "InputDevice" # Identifier and driver Identifier "Mouse1" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "PS/2" Option "Device" "/dev/mouse" .... .... I'm using (ugh) RH 7.3 here. I've put RH 8 on my Dell C600 laptop and the ps/2 mouse thing seems to work in that one also. Suggestion: If you're not using a ps/2 mouse with your Dell, get one and plug it in as there is a ps/2 port specifically for that (right next to the ps/2 port for the keyboard). The other day, I bought a 'brand X' ps/2 mouse in Walmart for under $10. It wasn't the greatest thing but it filled my need of the moment. -- jimbo@sonic.net Eclectic Garbanzo BBS, (707) 539-1279 "My parents just came back from a planet where the dominant lifeform had no bilateral symmetry, and all I got was this stupid F-Shirt." |

I again forgot one important detail - that it is a standard meat-and-potatoes PS/2 mouse. I'll try PS/2 for the mouse protocol and "/dev/psaux" for the mouse device and I'll see how it goes. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Good idea. On my system, /dev/mouse is symlinked to /dev/misc/psaux. (I've a Red Hat system remember.) The reason for this is so that an app can be hard coded to look for /dev/mouse, as opposed to having to be configured at run time to look for something else (/dev/psaux, /dev/ttyS0, etc). -- jimbo@sonic.net Eclectic Garbanzo BBS, (707) 539-1279 "My parents just came back from a planet where the dominant lifeform had no bilateral symmetry, and all I got was this stupid F-Shirt." |

Okay, that worked like a charm as well - thanks again!!! You guys in here have been a big help - thanks!!! Now, I'm dealing with something a bit bizarre; I finally got through XF86Setup okay, but when I tried switching over to the X server, I got the following error: "Attention 26khz | 40hz Frequency is out of range" I then pressed enter, and got the following: "Do you want to create an X link to the VGA16 server?" and a note that the settings will be saved in the /var/x11R/bin folder. I clicked yes, got a note saying the move was successful, and it took me back to my command prompt. I then did startx and I got the KDE desktop, but with a 2-inch gap on the left side of the screen - and the resolution appears to be a bit too large, as well. This obviously points to the fact that I'll have to reconfigure my monitor and display settings; where would I need to go at this point to do that? Hope I can continue to come to the well for assistance. Thanks!! |
