I DID IT!!! On the fifth disk late last night I burned in Easy CD
Creator as above. I changed the file typ to .iso (important) and
bingo. When I opened it up Slackware directory structure. Did the same
with disk 2 and same result. By the way, I had checksumed the original
download (done on Mandrake Linux box, so was binary)

Anyway, next step, backup files from Mandrake and write down important
drivers to install, etc. and proceed with slack installation!
