| Hi I have just tried a full installation of Slackware 9.1 on my second machine, but half way through installing the packages the setup program exited with a Segmentation fault, and wouldn't load untill I rebooted the machine. Here is the machine spec: AMD K6-III 450MHz TMC AI5VG+ mobo with 512KB PB cache 128MB PC100 RAM ATI 3D Rage IIC 4MB AGP graphics Maxtor Fireball 3 30GB hard drive @ Primary Master 256MB swap partition Promise Ultra100TX2 IDE card (Not used at the mo as slackware can't seem to use it so hard disk is currently on mobo IDE controller) Quantum Fireball ST 2.1GB hard drive @ Primary Slave Creative Sound Blaster AWE64 sound card 50X CTX CD-ROM drive. Did the machine simply run out of memory - is my swap partition too small - or is it something else?? There is 128MB physical RAM and 256MB swap memory. Thanks Steven Graham |

What is your partitioning like? What package was being installed at the crash? > There is 128MB physical RAM and 256MB swap memory. That's fine. Jim |

If it segfaults at random points, it's your machine (probably dodgy memory, try reseating the sticks). If it segfaults at the same point (i.e. at the same package), double-check the MD5SUM of your downloaded ISO images. - -- George Georgakis-geeg AT tripleg net au-http://www.tripleg.net.au/ SlackBuild Central - http://slackpack.tripleg.net.au/ -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: PGPfreeware 6.5.8 for non-commercial use <http://www.pgp.com> iQA/AwUBP/wOGklp3nJf7PixEQLp1QCfRSVvJNI0FrEtZZ0opRt4ymev5qMA oLMk 2zqXxo8Y2yKEuJ2pb3sDqsyU =B1+n -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- |

I have a 20GB Partition for linux formatted as reiserfs (because of its speed) I have a 256MB swap partition. I also on this machine have a 4GB partition with Windows Me on it for running older win 9x software. This time it crashed when I was trying to set the up the Real time clock, past the package installing part. This is random. Steven Graham |

| As it is, this machine runs Windows NT and 2000 fine. But I have in the past with certain hardware found that this motherboard can be unstable in 2000, espcially with G400 graphics card and the promise Ultra100 car tat the same time. Maybe rather than dodgy memory it's the mobo. This afternoon I'm going to try it on another machine, the machine I will try it on currently runs FreeBSD. Anyway, why does slackware 9.1 setup crash on a machine that installs slackware 9.0 fine? Thanks for you help Steven Graham |

| Steven Graham <srg@dsl.pipex.com> says... >Anyway, why does Slackware 9.1 setup crash on a machine that installs >Slackware 9.0 fine? That's the question that is bothering me. A memory problem could do that (bad location unused in 9.0, critical in 9.1) but you tested your memory (and a good chunk of your processor and motherboard). If it was a marginal CD, I would expect error messages, not crashes. If it was a problem that happens on lots of different PCs, everyone here would be talking about it. This one is a real puzzler. I am grasping at straws here, but are you sure that 9.0 still installs? Any chance that the PC was good when you installed 9.0 and went bad just in time to hose your 9.1 install? -- Guy Macon, Electronics Engineer & Project Manager for hire. In fact Slack 9.1 is blazingly fast!!! I think on the K6-III machine's TMC AI5VG+ mobo was to blame and to be honest I've had enought with it, in Slack 9.1, Win2000 and XP it's given me problems. Anyway, last thing: When playing audio CDs, the cd plays but there is no sound. I have a Soundblaster Live! running ALSA driver and the CD Burner is connected to the sound card vire a normal analog CD cable. I have run alsaconf but to no avail. Thanks for the Help! |

Try the digital connector, if there is one. That's the one I had to use with my Audigy 2 Platinum. -- Simon <simon@no-dns-yet.org.uk> **** GPG: F4A23C69 "We demand rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty." - Douglas Adams |
