| After asking many questions on aols I would like to share a success story for Slackware with you. My IT manager needed a Unix box set up to perform some tasks that he required. It had to be able to interface to windoze by allowing a GUI to be run up under Reflections X, serving out the home directories under samba so that they could be mapped as windoze drives and redirecting user mail messages so that they appeared in their windoze mailboxes. I needed an opportubity to broaden my Linux skills, on Company Time, to be able to provide a realistic Linux IT service when the need arises (which probably won't be that far in the future). It was agreed that I could set up a Linux box to perform the IT Manager's tasks and two distros immediately came to mind being Mandrake 9.1 and Slackware 9.1. Mandrake 9.1 was installed first. Our parent compay is French and I intended to make an impression by using a French Distro.Samba was brought up and running but the only GUI that would begin to work with Reflections X was xdm (Yugh!) and Icewm (Double yugh!). This did not look good especially as I wanted to give the users KDE as their desktop and no amount of tweaking and howtos seemed to be able to fix things. After a week I decided to reinstall and try Slackware 9.1 and did a full blown installation. Samba worked a treat with the configuration file originally used on Mandrake. A minor tweak to the gdm.conf file brought GDM up with Reflections X and gave users their KDE desktop and a full set of tools. User's email was successfully redirected to their windoze mailboxes. Also all the the IT Manager's Unix shell scripts worked immediately and he was happy to tell me so. The next step will be to set up cups/samba to allow the users to print to the windoze printer. In this case, although Slackware may not yet have won the war and been accepted as my company standard it certainly has won the first battle. Felt you should know. -- Regards Martin Hughes Linux User #283064 Blessed are those who expect nothing; for they shall not be disappointed. |

I should definitely have used a better turn of phrase in these turbulent times. I probably shouldn't try to be this sarcastic, I think its a disease... and again gawd! |
