| Here are two: 1) I bought a new printer (an Epson Stylus C82) for my desktop Slackware 9.0 system. I had been running an HP 660C printer on /dev/lp1 (/dev/lp0 has my Epson LQ570 dot matrix printer), but I wanted a better printer for printing digital photos. Uncabled the HP, cabled the Epson. Changed the print filter (moved to the gimp-print plugin for ghostscript), defined a couple of new print queues (one for regular print, one for photo print) and restarted lpd. Everything worked, no problems. 2) Got a call Thursday afternoon: "We have to switch your server over from token ring to ethernet. Today." 'S all right, I had an ethernet card installed already. "OK", I said, "just cable it up, and I'll switch the software." A quick "ifconfig" and the ethernet NIC was configured to it's address. Forgot to mention, I was 30Km away, and telnetting in to the box (yes, telnet. I don't have putty on my home box, the work machine is accessable only through the corporate encrypted VPN, and my employer doesn't feel that I have anything to hide from him (and sometimes snoops just to make sure) ). This AM, when I visited the server room for a quick visual inspection, the server was humming away, both NICs conversing. No reboot, no mess; Slackware 9.0 on that machine as well. Dontcha just love it when things just work. No reboots, no BSOD, no need to even be onsite; it just works. -- Lew Pitcher Master Codewright and JOAT-in-training Registered Linux User #112576 (http://counter.li.org/) Slackware - Because I know what I'm doing. |
