Default Upgrade question (10.1 -> 12.0)

I'm going to be upgrading my home machine from 10.1 to 12.0. Will I be
able to do an actual upgrade, or should I do a clean install? (Or is
that a meaningless question?)

Upgrades over multiple versions aren't supported. You could update
incrementally several times but, in a jump that large, I'd just back up
and do a clean install.

So much for doing things the lazy way. Thanks.
