| Folks, every now and then I get a brain stall trying to setup something, here's today's... I have a slak 10 box/kde, which works very nicely. Printing has always been a mystery to me with Linux, and I only use slak in the house (laptop has Lindows for playing on airplanes and annoying MS fans). But... Any suggestions on getting my slak 10/kde box talking to my HP6110 USB printer? I can get the laptop to do it, using Lindows/Debian. But that does me no good here in the house. Printe manager in KDE doesn't seem to have a "add printer" type function, or am I overlooking something there? Thanks, y'all, for any advice on this matter. George C Awstin, TX |

It has a little button with a wand on it that will launch the wizard. However, have you tried cups? If that's what you use, then you can just fire up your favorite web browser and point it to http://localhost:631 to find a very intuitive interface which will walk you through the process of adding a printer. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.7 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFB9CGR/u+3PIk1ZXQRAhaZAJ4p4S0HPif9JqfHb38EkxfZWB+0pACfXOe t msIDcM+sVEi5rdIUJHkvSlA= =srnt -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- |

Also, are you sure that you didn't install BOTH cups AND lprng? That's the default and it can cause neither to work. I'd uninstall BOTH (removepkg) and then reinstall cups. Then either use the kdeprint manager or the web interface of http://localhost:631 to add it. OH, make sure that you have the driver for the HP printer. On http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_pr...OfficeJet_6110 it shows that it uses the hpijs driver which is (should be) installed with cups. Do: al@xxxxr:~$ locate hpijs |grep 6110 and you should get: /usr/share/ppd/HP/HP-OfficeJet_6110-hpijs.ppd.gz If you don't, you got problems and it will take a more experienced Slacker to bail your ass out. Let us know how it goes and I'm sure we can get you going on this quickly. Al C. > Thanks, y'all, for any advice on this matter. > > George C > Awstin, TX |

I have an HP DeskJet 6122 connected by USB to one of my Slackware machines. I'm using the Slackware packages for CUPS & hpijs. You'll need 'usblp' support either build into the kernel or the module loaded. When they're installed, you can go to <URL:http//localhost:631/> and add your printer. <URL:http://www.linuxprinting.org/> will probably have something useful to add for your printer. -- Simon <simon@no-dns-yet.org.uk> **** GPG: F4A23C69 "We demand rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty." - Douglas Adams |

Now, a Quest further. I have a mouse, 3 button, Belkin lsusb shows; Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000 Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000 Bus 002 Device 002: ID 1241:1111 Belkin (?) | It works fine with windows and with mozilla, netscape, kwrite, kmail and open office, but I can't get it to lpr or llpr a standard text file. The Samsung people claim to support slackware (for which we should all be grateful), but I don't think their 'help' people really understand the question. I just want to print text files (program listings, mostly) like in the old days, not with a word processor. Any hope? And does anybody know of a linux word processor that will allow 15 or 20 columns in a 4-point or smaller font? Word Perfect can't see the Samsung, abiword can't even load the file I want to print, open office is nice but the smallest font is 6 point, kwrite won't do columns... -- Cheers, Bev ================================================== ======= "If you watch TV news, you know less about the world than if you just drank gin straight from the bottle." - Garrison Keillor |

I'm at work at the moment (sigh) but if you could give me anexample of the typesof commands that are failing , e.g lpr file.txt; cat file.txt > lpr etc. I use an Okidata ML 390 with cups and I'm sure I can do what you want Rinaldi -- When you try to make an impression, the chances are that is the impression you will make. |

The ML-1740 is a host based printer which means the Operating System processes the print job, not the printer. Go to www.linuxprinting.org Look for the FAQ's. You should see Samsung at the bottom of the page. You may find a workaround. Copy and page this link into your web browser http://cbbrowne.com/info/printing.html you may find the answer to your problem at that website. We have tested the ML-1740 with Red Hat version 9.We installed the driver using lpr. We were able to print simple text files from the terminal. -------------------------- "I think my mind is going, Dave." I assume this means to use their program to add an ML-1710 printer as lp2 and print to that. I'm reluctant to try to "improve" something that finally started working when I don't know why it stopped working :-( > I use an Okidata ML 390 with cups and I'm sure I can do what you want Just think, the world is full of immortal Okidata dot matrix printers that will probably last as long as Schwinn Varsities! ObMozilla: I can't get either Moz 1.8 or NS 4.79 to print landscape instead of portrait. 'Print preview' works fine, but the page comes out portrait. Fortunately there's not much reason to print b+w pix at 600 dpi. -- Cheers, Bev ------------------------------------------------- I have no idea what I'm talking about, so here's a bunny with a pancake on his head: http://www.ebaumsworld.com/forumfun/misc15.jpg |

We've had a Panasonic KXP-4420 for at least 10 years. Heavy sucker, and slow. Something has happened to it that results in the bottom inch of the paper being unprintable, so we sprung for the Samsung because of its linux-friendliness. It's really fast, which is nice. It really sucks to have to wait 5 minutes per page :-( The KXP DOES lpr simple text files quickly, though. > > ObMozilla: I can't get either Moz 1.8 or NS 4.79 to print landscape > > instead of portrait.
