I know alot of you guys are sysadmins,

I was wondering if you had any preferences with website design software.

I'm looking for ease of use etc. I'd prefer something linux based, as
I'll problobly be running the site with apache. However, for a
proffesional package it'll problobly have to be something like front page,
as most of the linux software availible is for hand-coders.

I use Quanta which is written for KDE desktop environment. For me it is
enough for developing PHP & MYSQL web apps and as far as i know it's
going to have WYSWIG abilities. However you can use Open Office for
visual site building.

I think that's the audience you're more likely to reach here. I don't
know where to suggest that you take this where it might be on topic,
but I'm sure you'd do better in almost any other distro's newsgroup.

FWIW, bluefish is very good for professionals, but I presume you're
wanting something for pointy-clicky artistic non-computer people.

Do you really think mcedit is powerful enough? It's probably the
easiest editor to use for quick and dirty stuff but I like vim for
doing serious work. You can't open two files at the same time on a
split screen for one thing.

Hand-code it - it's better (vim isn't necessarily the best by all peoples
opinion, but it's what i use)

if you *really* want a WYSIWYG editor, OpenOffice.Org Writer for Web.

And that's likely to be what most people here use. A google search for
"linux html editor WYSIWYG" turns up several results, including of
course bluefish. I think I heard that womething called WebHand was
good, but I've never used a GUI to write HTML pages.

Actually, most linux software available is for people who already know what
they are doing. Perhaps this is not 'fair' to newbies (clueless or otherwise),
but that's the way it is.

FWIW, it's not really possible to get a 'WYSIWYG generated' webpage to work;
html doesn't work that way (and that's why there's such a proliferation of
flash and java/javascript out there). The best a WYSIWYG generator can do is
'what you see is something like what you get, so long as you use this browser
with these settings on this desktop of this size to browse the page'. For the
effort, hand coding html is just as good, and considerably cheaper.

My personal preference is jedit based on java. a lot of programming can be
started with it and the codes are easy to reas as they show up in different
color for different fields.

This is what I do. some of my friends, that use web design software, think the
pages I've done suck because they don't have a lot of effects. My band' web site
(www.thedus.cjb.net) was done all in VIM. Works good on Lynx, Mozilla, IE,
Opera, LINKS, any browser

As I've readed: "WYSIWYG editor? VI! I see text, I get text!"

PS: I despise Flash and Java. JavaScript is OK.

Check out http://nvu.com/ It is not super great, but it is not bad. I use it
to make tables, and tables in tables, etc. Then I open up a text editor and
work from there.
