| Let me tell you my story: I own an old PII with a Nvidia TNT2 card I used to run Mandrake 9.1 on. Now I switched to Slackware 9.1 (kernel 2.4.22) I downloaded the latest Nvidia driver from their site; I installed it; I changed "vesa" driver with "nvidia" in XF86Config; I rebooted the machine. With Mandrake, when X was about to start, the NVidia logo appeared on the screen... but no logo appeared. only some blue flashing, then a blue screen (whoa! Blue screens! about an year has passed since I dropped Wi****s 98 and blue screens again!!!) informing me the Nvidia module did not load and X won't run. I am pretty sure the horizontal and vertical frequencies of the screen are ok (btw I switched to TFT - does it matter?), and I even tried to upgrade the kernel to 2.4.23 (uninstalled and reinstalled NVidia drivers) but no success. what went wrong? Please, tell me, I don't want to get back to Mandrake!!! |

Write the "nv" part and make sure you have the correct amount of kb. According to what I'm reading about Slack, and IIRC, Slack comes with the "nv" driver by default. You got nothing to lose. I'm installing Slack 9.1 this weekend, wish me luck. forza! mario |

The "nvidia" is the closed source original nvidia driver, which allows to run all kinds of 3D games with excellent performance. To the OP: I can't help :-(... I got 5 machines with the nvidia drivers and slack running ok, after some probs (in one I had to upgrade the mobo bios). Maybe a verbose log of the X startup process will give some hints. Actually, slack does not provide a different linux compared to other distros (maybe slightly more conservative and careful in the configuration, with an absolute minimum of unnecessary patches, which makes it stable). Therefore, if the thing runs under mandrake, it should run nicely using slack. Maybe more info would be useful... Good luck Franz -- Franz M. Sauerzopf Atominstitut, TU Wien |

Why did you reboot? Some Windoze reminiscence? Did you read the README that come with the nVidia drivers? I don't think so. If you did you'd find out you need to set more options than "driver". Hmm, you are absolutely right of course, the thing is, is he going to run games??? or does he want to get a better picture than the one the vesa driver offers? With an old PII, what kind of games is he gonna run? Maybe i'm misunderstanding the whole thing. regards, mario |

And if you don't install the driver from Nvidia, 3D games will run veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery slow even on modern machines (O credevi che la scheda 3D mi servisse per scrivere una letterina con OpenOffice?) |

If he had actually read the manual, it's unlikely he would have posted that question. Getting those kernel tainting modules in place and editing XF86Config is about as simple as it gets since it's all right there in the docs. It isn't rocket science. > Solution: most likely PEBKAC.
