Hello, after i switch to x11, i cannot use more XV video driver of mplayer!
Anyone found a solution ?

Mplayer still works with the xv driver for me after switching to x.org. I
wonder if there is something else causing your problem. Are there any
errors given when you try to play video with mplayer?

ok, with the new tgz of the today current, mpl. is going fine but before
when mplayer was launched from console i saw a "low resurces error" -_-' !
googling a bit i found another with my problem...

I had the same problem with XFree 4.4.0 from current and with the
x.org from dropline gnome (I haven't tried the x.org packages from
current), but only once in a while, and closing down a few
applications would solve the problem. I have reverted to XFree 4.3.0,
and the problem is gone.

Perhaps it's the driver in XFree 4.4.0 (and x.org) for our graphic
cards. I use a Matrox G400, what about you ?

I have considered getting a cheap Radeon 9200 card instead of the old
Matrox card, with the hope it will solve the problem - the G400 is
getting a bit old anyways

yes is another optimal solution, but as i said today current x11 package fix
my problem

i use an ati 8500 with the latest ati official drivers that are compatibles
with xfree 4.3 and x.org !

IMHO, i'll switch on a nvidia due to optimal drivers support....ati is
really ugly about this 'cause cheaf architect said they invest really less
on linux

I've actually installed both ATI and nVidia's binary drivers in Slack 9.1
(one on my system at work, and on my system at home), and I agree with
Scrooge, in Slackware, the nVidia drivers are *much* easier to install
than ATI's.

I also applaud nVidia for making the extra effort to write an installer
that isn't "rigged" to favor one distro over another. I support that!

However, NVidia's drivers can take some tweaking to get the system
stable. I've set up 2 NVidia cards under Linux. Mine's now stable, but
the jury's still out on my sister's machine...

I've heard other people say that too, but I've never had any trouble.
Mine's an ASUS GF4-Ti4200 8x 128MB, I've been running it in linux for at
least a year now. (and my linux box stays up 24x7)

I've got a friend who's has a GF-FX5700 and a 5900. He has been using
both for about 3 months without incident.

enabled that was corrupting (garbeling) the screen when transparency was
used in GTK. GTK fixed it in about a month, and to be fair, the nvidia
docs warned me:

THIS OPTION IS EXPERIMENTAL. ENABLE IT AT YOUR
OWN RISK. There is no correctness test suite for the
RENDER extension so NVIDIA can not verify that RENDER
acceleration works correctly.

But that's been the only thing.

You haven't had a single problem since then? According to the
changelog
on slackware-current, it only fixes a problem with the configuration
tools.

My problem wasn't consistent, sometimes I could use xv with mplayer
and sometimes I couldn't, but with XFree 4.3.0 I haven't had a single
problem with mplayer.

I was planning on using the opensource drivers included in
x.org/XFree, since they should give accelerated 3D as well as decent
2D, without having to use binary-only drivers from ATI/Nvidia.

I tried an Nvidia card about a year ago, but it kept freezing/locking
my system roughly once a week, so I sold it and went back to the old
trusty G400 - I don't think I want to try another Nvidia card.
