ok, i have a problem. i decided it would be nice to get a nice new matrox
g550 dual head graphics card, works great with windoze. then i thought i
will try it with slackware shouldnt b too hard. matrox supply linux drivers,
so i tried running the script that came on the cd. then i got these drivers
only work with XFree86 v 4.2.0. so i went to the XFree86 site and downloaded
4.2.0 and ran the install script. not knowing much about XFree86 I just said
yes to everything :-/
ok so when i tried to start x it didnt work. so i thought what the heck and
ran the matrox driver install script. this worked.....
trying to start x now gives unable to find a display and displays not
configurable.....help!
my linux knowledge is OK, but i know nothing about X really. Oh and i'm
running slack 9.0

Then go to Matrox download site and grab the newest version that
supports XFree86 4.3.0

ahhh, ok cheers. that means reinstalling XFree86 onto my slackware system -
is this easy or will i be better off by just reinstalling. my setup is new
today anyway. also does anyone else have any experience of using multiple
displays with linux/slackware?

Dunno, I've never backgraded a manually downgraded XFree86.

But give it a try, worst thing that can happend is that goes wrong.

well i reinstalled slack and the drivers installed correctly and x
starts....however when i try and install mga power desk (matrox config gui)
i'm stuck. installing from rpm doesnt work because it claims it can't find
various glibc libaries which are ther. so i downloaded the source when i run
make i get the following information:

obviously the make install fails because of the make fail but why does make
fail?! it looks like something to do with older versions being used by i
have no idea what to do....

Then you should be able to change the rpm to a tgz using rpm2tgz and
then install the slackware way. Slackware packagesystem doesn't check
the dependies before installing, but if you are sure they are there
this should work.

I have matrox g450
you can install the power-desk rpm without checking the dependencies

but powerdesk is for xfree 4.2 and it does not work for 4.3 the XF86Config
it makes is not good for 4.3
you have to edit it on your own after running power-desk to have X work
correctly

there are other nice things about matrox, you can have dual-head console,
but you have to recompile the
kenrnel with matrox acceleration instead of vesa fb

i downloaded the latest beta version of powerdesk which works with xfree
4.3, works like a treat. in fact i would say the gui is better than for
windoze :0)
