| ok, i have a problem. i decided it would be nice to get a nice new matrox g550 dual head graphics card, works great with windoze. then i thought i will try it with slackware shouldnt b too hard. matrox supply linux drivers, so i tried running the script that came on the cd. then i got these drivers only work with XFree86 v 4.2.0. so i went to the XFree86 site and downloaded 4.2.0 and ran the install script. not knowing much about XFree86 I just said yes to everything :-/ ok so when i tried to start x it didnt work. so i thought what the heck and ran the matrox driver install script. this worked..... trying to start x now gives unable to find a display and displays not configurable.....help! my linux knowledge is OK, but i know nothing about X really. Oh and i'm running slack 9.0 TIA bino |

Then go to Matrox download site and grab the newest version that supports XFree86 4.3.0 <URL: http://www.matrox.com/mga/support/drivers/files/lnx_30.cfm> -- Thomas O. But give it a try, worst thing that can happend is that goes wrong. -- Thomas O. This area is designed to become quite warm during normal operation. |

| well i reinstalled slack and the drivers installed correctly and x starts....however when i try and install mga power desk (matrox config gui) i'm stuck. installing from rpm doesnt work because it claims it can't find various glibc libaries which are ther. so i downloaded the source when i run make i get the following information: bash-2.05b# make make all-recursive make[1]: Entering directory `/root/mgapdesk' Making all in src make[2]: Entering directory `/root/mgapdesk/src' cd .. && automake --gnu src/Makefile configure.in:4: your implementation of AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE comes from an configure.in:4: old Automake version. Stop. make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/mgapdesk/src' make: *** [install-recursive] Error 1 obviously the make install fails because of the make fail but why does make fail?! it looks like something to do with older versions being used by i have no idea what to do.... thanx for any help bino |

Slackware packagesystem doesn't check the dependies before installing, but if you are sure they are there this should work. -- Thomas O.
