Default Xorg very slow vs XFree86 3.3.6

Hi.

I've 2 identical old Compaq laptops. On one I've got Slack 8.1 with XFree86
3.3.6 and on the other, Slack 10 with Xorg (the one that comes with it). The
XFree86 takes 7 secs to load, whereas Xorg takes 30 secs (to the same window
manager). Any ideas, anyone? I may dump Xorg and go back to XFree86. What
was the problem with XFree86 that caused Patrick to change?

Xfree86 3.3.6 is quite an old version. You'll probably find similar slow
down with XFree86 4.4.0 (or what ever the current stable release is). In
fact, isn't X.org based on the last XFree86 release before the licence
change anyway?

Yes, from what i've heard it's (almost) exactly the same.
Jim, You might want to check your video driver.
Run xorgsetup to autodetect your display settings.

Hope this helps.

What makes you think X11 is the cause of this problem? 3 other things
have changed since 8.1: 1.) glibc; 2.) kernel version; and 3.) just
about everything else. Any of 1, 2, or 3 could also have contributed to
the slowdown.

If you want to try to fix it, do some investigating. See if you can
identify what's taking so long during startx.

You will not find this to be an easy task. You may have to compile
EVERYTHING from scratch. I tried 9.1's XFree86 4.3.0 on a -current
install a few months back, and everything was broken. Perhaps you
should consider leaving these machines on 8.1.

He wrote about it extensively in the ChangeLog.

FWIW, I've added this to the FAQ:

Apparently the size of the xorg config file has an effect on the time it
takes to startup.
