| Just wondering if any amd64 user is stepping here through. I'm just interested in hearing user stories, keep contact and solve some small problems. Owning my amd64 running on an asus k8v for 3 days and it's amazing, Can't believe to have lived without this box in the last decade. It's sooo fast, i still can't imagine. BTW: may any P4HT user may post some emerge times? These are mines (using "-O2 -pipe"): - gcc: 14 mins - XFfree: 22 mins Still having some sound issues on my asus k8v. Anyone got the via hardware to beep (no error, everything seems ok, sound unmuted, just no sound - tested oss and alsa, bios speech works)? Is there is there any special (64bit) application whith wich i can impress my friends and show them the power of the k8? Mentioning the very short compile times is very impressive but you can't really "see" something... Thx, Jan |

Here is my dual AMD. AMD 2x2400MP with 2 GB of memory. gcc: 26 minutes xfree: 49 minutes |

More or less everything works now, except audio. If anyone got it working on Tyan K8W, I would like to know. Also, Midnight Commander is blocked at the moment. Shame... I hope things in the amd64 world clear up a bit soon, although its fine even now. Dual Opteron, which is only decent in Windows 2000, under Gentoo really flies. I'm really glad that bought that two machines, even though software instalation and machine configuration took me more than a week. It sounded so simple. Take hard disks etc from old machines, insert them into new machines and install Windoze, Linux etc What can go wrong with that ? ;o) Ehh, no mater. Speed and stability of the tandem are really worth the effort Regards, Branko |

Redmond is taking their sweet time getting a 64-x86 OS out and never mind the lag we'd have to endure for the native 64bit apps to be written. I don't think I'll abandon Windows altogether as it isn't an either/or situation for me. I've found XPpro/server 2003 to be decent desktop OS once you address the security issues to keep Redmond from spying on you after the installation and any updates. I don't want a dual boot however. I'd prefer removable OS boot HDs and a large shared internal data HD. How well do fast SATA (37GB WD Rapters) HDs work in Gentoo? How about SATA RAID arrays? |
