| Is there an alternative to using artsd in kde? Sometimes arts works for me while other times it doesn't. I also don't like how it takes over the whole audio system making it so no other app can use it (ie. xmms using alsa output). I've read somethings about using DMIX with alsa. I also read something about using esd. I'm kind of lost in the whole sound server thing. |

After removing the sound driver from the kernel, and using alsa-drivers instead, the next big thing was to turn off the "KDE sound server" in the control panel. Artsd still runs, but it all seems to work now. I don't know what the KDE sound server is, but turning it off helped a lot. Blake |

Alsa is good and fast but not for multiplexed sound. I have fiddled around with jackd and it is truly awesome from a performance/latency p.o.v. but even the devs reckon it's just still too experimental to use and not have fairly major problems. So I'm just using esd until some smart person gets jackd working safely. At least the days of redhat 8 and terrible sound are over. |

That's what I thought. But in the KDE control panel (kcontrol), there is a tab for "Sound System", and you can uncheck "Enable the Sound System". This is the tab that lets you adjust the sound latency, which I was messing with to get skype to work. Now everything works great, and the "Sound System" is disabled, but artsd still shows up (even after reboot). I suppose it would be nice to know why this works, but for now I'm happy that it does work. Maybe the sound system does more than artsd does. Blake |
