In the former case as Johannes says, information is needed. You say the booting message says you have an ATA drive. What is that message? What do you mean /dev/hda exists? As a file? That is probably irrelevant. What is the relevant content of dmesg? You admit you do not know what is going on. Why do you feel that you are then able to interpret the messages? hda is the first drive on the first ide controller (the master) Do you have a master drive on the first ide controller? What error messages do you get? ]"Johannes Truschnigg" <johannes.truschnigg@gmx.at> wrote in message ]news:2q5su8Fr0n5tU1@uni-berlin.de... ]> -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- ]> Hash: SHA1 ]> ]> Release some more specs of your system - are you sure you're installing ]> Gentoo on an IDE-Disk? I hit the same problem recently; whatever the problem was, it was with creating the link/device node -- running "mknod /dev/hda b 3 0" fixed the problem, and after running fdisk, the devices for /dev/hda1 ... hda7 were all populated properly. -- Nate Edel http://www.nkedel.com/ "I do have a cause though. | Thanks all. I've got it working. Somehow the 2004.2 release does not like my system (HP laptop with AMD64 Operion), I switched back to 2004.1 release and everything worked out just fine. G.
