Default devfsd

Can anybody tell me how devfs works?

I have a problem with some devices (DVD, scanner). I can't open/mount it.
I always got the startup error that .devfsd wasn't removable on startup.
/dev/.devfsd was empty. So I removed it manually ...
Not good !
I still can boot, and the same devices are still accessible and the same
not.

Now I don't see the point of having a .devfsd.

For instance, there is a /dev/hda, but there is no /dev/hdc (DVD) but in
the section ide, I do can get to the ide DVD.

Thx

Most .blablabla files that are empty are there as a marker file. It's
not the contents of that file that matters, it's the fact that the file
is there.

capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the
safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?
