I managed to get on the system as root, and after giving up I tried shutting down the system with 'shutdown -p now'. I got the message: "You don't exist, go away!" Apparently, /etc/passwd was gone because of the failing harddisk, so I was logged in as a user that didn't exist any more. Nice to have a system tell you you don't exist ;-) Sybren -- The problem with the world is stupidity.
