| I downloaded and installed 1.4 CD's 1 and 2. I have twice attempted a stage 3 install and twice got "illegal instruction" for "emerge -k gentoo-sources." I have tried other variants of emerge and emerge does Not work. I printed and followed the 32 page installation instructions document on the site. ---- Bob |

The -k (and -K) switch(es) tell emerge to install from binary packages, a nice option if your using the GRP, or are using alsa and tend to rebuild your kernel alot (and thus have to either rebuild, or re-install your alsa-driver) but not much else. Try just an emerge -pv gentoo-sources to see what happens, and then if its only going to merge things you want, just emerge gentoo-sources. Side note: the online documentation is maintained by volunteers (actually ALL of gentoo is done by volunteers but thats besides the point), so its occasionally (though thankfully rarely) inaccurate. Check the "Last updated" date on the online version against your printout and if their different, see what (if any major) changes have been made. If my fix works for you, and the online doc still has it shown erroniously, perhaps it would be prudent to send in a 'bug' notice to the maintainer (should be listed somewhere on the install docs) -- Shan Destromp --- Sent: Tue, Jan 13, 2004 @ 05.10.35 EST ---- OS: GNU/Linux 2.4.22-gentoo-r4 Processor: AuthenticAMD i686 |
