| Perhaps I'd better start at the beginning. I'm on an IBM Thinkpad 600E. I used to be a DeadRat user, but got tired of the obscure little moments of bondage and discipline DeadRat imposes when trying to do advanced stuff, and I was frustrated with the 2.4.X kernel hacks they'd done for performance that hosed some thread models, like the one used by WineX. So I tried to install Gentoo. To get full use out the system, I decided to go whole-hog: 2.6.7 kernel and udev, no more devfsd. One of the recommendations in the 'upgrade to 2.6 and udev' documentation is to run "emerge -U kbd". So, I did that. My poor little box has now rebuilt gcc and is in the process, as I write, of upgrading glibc too. Is this to be expected from emerge? |
