Try emerge /usr/portage/sys-devel/gcc/gcc-3.4.0-r6.ebuild It is still masked, since some programs don't compile when using it, yet. Jochen |

This was kde-3.2.2 with the gcc-3.4.0-r6 package. Perhaps earlier versions of KDE and/or GCC wouldn't have worked; I know there's been a lot of work in the Gentoo GCC 3.4.0 packages between gcc-3.4.0 and gcc-3.4.0-r6, for instance. It's also possible that some compiler options present challenges, and I happened not to use any of those. Finally, this was on an AMD Athlon 64 system, so it's possible that GCC is more able to produce AMD64 code for KDE than to produce x86 code for KDE. -- Rod Smith, rodsmith@rodsbooks.com http://www.rodsbooks.com Author of books on Linux, FreeBSD, and networking |

When you check http://packages.gentoo.org/packages/?category=sys-devel you see that gcc-3.4.0-r6 is stable on AMD64, but not at all supported on x86. I'll have a new look at the gcc 3/4/0-r6 release and kde 3.2.3. Thank you, for the info, I'd never would have known otherwise. > Finally, this was on an AMD Athlon 64 > system, so it's possible that GCC is more able to produce AMD64 code for > KDE than to produce x86 code for KDE. > -- ************************************************** **************************** Registered Linux User Number 185956 FSF Associate Member number 2340 since 05/20/2004 Join me in chat at #linux-users on irc.freenode.net Buy an Xbox for $149.00, run linux on it and Microsoft loses $150.00! 5:15pm up 65 days, 19:57, 6 users, load average: 0.25, 0.15, 0.10 |

It took a while on an old amd 1.2gig athlon.... but it compiled without errors. yes, there's been some major improvments since 3.4.0 was first put into portage. Now to see how the new gcc does on other packages...
