It did take the better part of a week to get everything up and installed properly, but I feel it was well worth the effort. |

At first I thought there was no value in this system and method. As I learned more about portage, I discovered that the 50 or so packages I maintained for myself and others in Slackware could be automatically done here with minor tweaking. Yes, some ports are out of date (xscreensaver, ROX libraries), but easy enough to fix once I got the hang of it. I was especially impressed with the fact I could cvs using ebuild! Lastly, it was a real plus to find things like zip encryption and cryptoloop extensions already patched into zip and mount, etc. These I had to do separately on my own previously. Gentoo definitely takes a lot of work to get going, and my first reaction was "this is not worth it." I now use it full time. Regards, and patience! |
