Default Hotplugging

I've downloaded gentoo 1.4 basic cd image.

When I boot from the cd, it seems to be taking forever to start PCI and
USB hotplugging.
Does this indicate that something is wrong or can it take ages?

Yes, it takes ages. But when installed and booting from the hard drive takes
but a second.

Live CD kernel has to probe to see what modules are needed. If you don't
have usb or a laptop, I'd boot with nohotplug nousb on the command line to
disable it.
