| I've been using the Gentoo distribution for over a now. I've approached a few publishers about a book on the distribution. They've asked me to submit an outline. I've got most of it done but would like to see what other people think. If you were to see a book written about Gentoo, what would you like to see in it? Chuck Wegrzyn |

I would expect to see an in-depth explanation of portage, it's possibilities, limits etc. Also, a chapter on how to make your own ebuilds. -- luc wastiaux |

Maybe something like http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/devrel...k/handbook.xml |

That sort of contradicts each other, doesn't it ? First you state that the outline is nearly done, i.e. you know what you're going to put in, and then you ask what we would like to see put in. I'd start by checking with the Gentoo documentation developers first - if anybody knows anything, they do. And why not tell us what your outline is up to this point then ? -- J All your bits are belong to us - again. |

| Yes I do have an outline. It covers what I think I would like in a book. What I am looking for are ideas from others. There isn't any contradiction. Please don't spend more than two pages in an Introduction about this subject. Gentoo is geared towards folks who appreciate technology and are interested in getting down and dirty right away with it. b) Consider what is already writen about Gentoo (such as the link submitted by i did not for example) and other documentation. Clarify existing docs, perhaps, but please do not duplicate them. That said, I would like to see more information about server-type situations on Gentoo. IDS info, logging info, server config info, network design info, security info, etc. More info about the "bigger picture" might be good subject material for a Gentoo book. Good luck on your project, Dan |

Why aren't you telling us what you already have? Without that information, 90% of what we come up with is already in there. This way, you're wasting our time and yours. Sybren -- The problem with the world is stupidity. Not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself? |

Many people, novice to moderately experienced Gentoo users, have trouble with finalizations: alsa, printer setup, cdrw on 4.2.x kernels, video cards and the like. -- oNb Another happy Linux user - # 276084.
