You ccould install Portage within another distribution... and then slowly emerge you way into a new Gentoo system. You'd have to manually clean up all the old files that Portage doesn't overwrite or know about... That's actually more or less what you're doing when you're installing from the LiveCD. Only difference is that the installed distro is located in RAM and on the CD.
