I was wondering if it was possible to install Gentoo from inside of
another installed distro, and not from the livecd.

Shouldn't be any trouble really as long as they use somewhat same version of
glibc or else the chroot part will not work.

I've done it from a Knoppix live cd and from a mepis system. No problems
what so ever.

You ccould install Portage within another distribution... and then
slowly emerge you way into a new Gentoo system. You'd have to manually
clean up all the old files that Portage doesn't overwrite or know about...

That's actually more or less what you're doing when you're installing
from the LiveCD. Only difference is that the installed distro is
located in RAM and on the CD. You could just install Gentoo in a
subdirectory inside the other distro (done that a few times to create
custom Linux distros), and then use some LiveCD to basically replace the
system after you're done.
