| Does anyone know when KDE 3.4 will become non-masked? If (when) it does, if emerge kdebase, while running kde 3.2.2, what will happen to all my packages that all fit "in" the kdebase metapackage? Will they all become "separate" component packages, and if so, can I remove/install kde packages separately (at long last!) TIA David |

The answer to a question like that has always been, and will always be, when it's ready. > If (when) it does, if emerge kdebase, while running kde 3.2.2, what > will happen to all my packages that all fit "in" the kdebase > metapackage? Well, nothing will happen to the old install, as they're in different slots, and placed in different parts of the file system. > Will they all become "separate" component packages, and if so, can I > remove/install kde packages separately (at long last!) With KDE 3.4 you can choose whether you want the old collected packages, or the split ebuilds. The old system is used if you just do a simple upgrade. However, AFAIK it won't be easy to keep just what you need installed, if you use the meta-packages to install. Also, dependency calculation will take substantially longer with the massive increase of installed packages. -- PeKaJe Linux is not a desktop OS for people whose VCRs are still flashing "12:00". -- Paul Tomblin |

So when you emerge KDE 3.4, it will install along with the older KDE and not over write any of it. You'll end up with /usr/kde/3.2 and /usr/kde/3.4. As for the apps that are installed in /usr/kde/3.2.... they will continue to work, just fine. Yes, the KDE packages are now split out into small packages, pick and choose as you desire.... -- ************************************************** **************************** Registered Linux User Number 185956 FSF Associate Member number 2340 since 05/20/2004 Join me in chat at #linux-users on irc.freenode.net Buy an Xbox for $149.00, run linux on it and Microsoft loses $150.00! 12:07am up 6 days, 7:14, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00 |

I had many problems many times in the past with it and I lost much time of manualy recreating an environment I used to work in it before. It relates to e.g. foolish toolbars settings as it always after an user intervention dissipated in very ugly manner Maybe I was doing sth wrong or simply this toolbars was very remarkably underinvested? -------- S |
