| Hi, I just more or less successfully switched to kernel2.6 (development-sources package). Anyway some strange problems came up. I can start Xfree and most of the programs seem to run fine, this is everything I used by now but [a|x]term. I use fluxbox and didn't change any configs when I want to start a terminal thru the menu aterm just pops up for a second and then silently disappears, xterm doesn't even show up. Under 2.4 everything still is fine. Anyone with a hint? I guess it's not a big deal cause right now I'm writing this with pan from the same box. And the kernel is the only thing I changed since this appeared, i can't think of any other error sources. thx Martin |

With the 2.6 kernels you need to add ptyfs support to your kernel. Here's the post install ebuild info: * Please note that ptyfs support has been removed from devfs * in the later 2.5.x kernels, and you have to compile it in now, * or else you will get errors when trying to open a pty. * The option is File systems->Pseudo filesystems->/dev/pts * filesystem. (this is your relevant part, below is just other info that you might find interesting) * Also, note that you must compile in support for * input devices (Input device support->Input devices), * the virtual terminal (Character Devices->Virtual terminal), * vga_console (Graphics Support->Console...->VGA text console) * and the vt_console (Character Devices->Support for console...). * Otherwise, you will get the dreaded "Uncompressing the Kernel" * error. * Consult http://www.codemonkey.org.uk/post-halloween-2.5.txt * for more info about the development series.
