Default kernel upgrade and can't mount root filesystem

I upgraded vanilla sources from 2.4.19 to 2.4.20 and it went fine.
Then when I tried to upgrade to 2.4.21 I get the error on reboot:

Root filesystem could not be mounted read/write.

Ideas?

Did you compile your filesystem support into your kernel?

Yes, my root fs is reiserfs, and I included that. What's more, it gets
to a point that I am able to log in, so it is atleast reading /, just
many things fail after the "Root filesystem..." error.

Try upgrading to the 2.4.22 vanilla-sources. They seem to be more stable for
some reason.
