| Mandrake 10 totally rocks! This is my first experience with Linux and I can't believe I've waited this long to free myself from unstable Windows XP. It took about 1 hour to install Mandrake 10 on a Dell PiV system and everything went ok but for some reason my Windows software won't boot anymore. Not really a problem though because I won't be using Windows anymore as soon as I call AOL and find out how to use AOL with Linux. I wasn't able to get on the internet because I don't think my Cisco router is supported. Not a problem because as I understand it, Cisco makes terrible products anyway. I went out and purchased a Linksys BEFR41 and now I am on the internet. I'm going to ebay the Cisco. At first my HP printer didn't work but after looking on the internet using my business account because AOL doesn't work yet, I finally found out that I had to edit a CUPS file and then it works but only in black and white. I think I need to investigate this a little more, but I don't print in color much anyway. I wasn't getting any sound so I disabled the onboard sound and purchased a Soundblaster card for $69.99 and now I have sound. Mandrake recognized the card with Drake and it worked tight away. Onboard sound always sucked anyway. My video looks great but I could only get 640x480 and 16 colors so it was back to Fry's to get a new Nvidea card. I disabled the ATI onboard video and installed the card and now I get 1024x768 16bpp so I am happy. Mandrake is FAST as greased pigs in a circus! I'm having a little trouble with certain web pages but it's most likely my compyle what needs to be fixed. Can I make copies of these Mandrake CD's because I want to give them out to my friends so they don't have to be stuck with shitty Windows XP anymore. Tippy Stenstrude |

Linux is great for running on old obsolete hardware, just maybe not Mandrake which is resource hungry. I use onboard sound, videa with no problem on max settings and my printer and router work fine (the router shouldn't make any difference). And why won't your windows boot? I guess you didn't include it in your boot loader options. |
