| Hi, I want to try Gentoo. The install manual says you can use a live CD, a Gentoo live CD, or an already installed distro. I want to do the latter. I already have a Gentoo live CD, and I tried using it, but the computer I want to install Gentoo on is a bit old, so a stage one install took about four days. And then when I realised I'd made a mistake early in the install, the whole thing went down the drain. I'd like to try again, but four days is a bit long for the machine to be inaccessible (I use it on the side), so I'd like to do it using the distro already present (Mandrake 9,1). I'd like it to be a stage one for various reasons (mainly the experience). My problem is this, the manual doesn't really cover how to do it without booting from a live CD. I tried doing the first few steps, but quickly ran into problems in that I don't have stuff like emerge and env-update installed. I couldn't find any packages for it, but since installing from a distro is listed as an option, I assume there's a way. I'm thinking, something like booting into the root of the live CD from a console. Hell, I dunno. Maybe they were thinking you could just find rpms for all that stuff. I'd appreciate any help anyone can give me. |

Just follow it to the letter, except where you can't do something. Running 'mirrorselect' won't work from a non-gentoo system, but you'll be able to install without. Once you chroot to /mnt/gentoo, it won't make any difference. > I couldn't find any packages for it, but since installing from a > distro is listed as an option, I assume there's a way. I haven't done it any other way. Sybren -- The problem with the world is stupidity. Not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself? |
