Default nvidia riva128 which kernel module?

hi all,

i have gentoo installed on my old machine using the kernel-2.6.7
with a nvidia riva128 graphics.

there is a nvidia-kernel to emerge (which is explained in the
gentoo installation instructions, about 2MB) and there is also the
original driver from nvidia (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1.run,
about 8MB).

which should i use for my machine?

thx

nvidia-kernel IS the driver from nvidia! the only difference is that if
you merge nvidia-kernel, you'll be merging 5332 or 5336 instead of the
latest driver which is 6111, because the 6111 driver is masked (not
tested yet) on a default gentoo installation.
the default driver that emerge chooses will work fine, but if you insist
on merging the latest, you'll have to unmask it by adding a line that
says "media-video/nvidia-kernel ~x86" (assuming that your architecture
is x86) to the /etc/portage/package.keyword file.

hope this helps.

ok thanks, but how comes the difference of about 6MB in size between the
two drivers?

I am not sure but I guess because the latest driver contains more
features concerning new graphics chips like geforce 2, 3, 4, FX and 6
series, like TV-out, nview manager and stuff... you can check the
difference in features and supported chips on the website...

The driver from the nvidia site is not suited for Gentoo.

It is not in portage, so why bother ?
