But I still run old versions of progs. eix shows, e.g., kmail-3.4.1, but kmail -v returns 1.8.1. Same with knode, ksysguard, etc. Any advice appreciated as to why I can't seem to use the new progs. And where the heck are they coming from? -- |

Wow, do I not understand this. Why the following? [Tue Oct 11] edj:~$ eix ksysguard * kde-base/ksysguard Available versions: ~3.4.1 3.4.1-r1 ~3.4.2 [M]3.5_beta1 Installed: none <-------------- Homepage: http://www.kde.org/ Description: KDE System Guard Tue Oct 11] edj:~$ ksysguard -v Qt: 3.3.4 KDE: 3.4.1 KDE System Guard: 1.2.0 <---------------- And, as kmail 1.8.1 is the version, why this: [Tue Oct 11] edj:~$ eix kmail * kde-base/kmail Available versions: 3.4.1 3.4.1-r1 ~3.4.2 ~3.4.2-r1 [M]3.5_beta1 Installed: 3.4.1-r1 <------------------- Homepage: http://www.kde.org/ Description: KDE mail client There is no kmail 1.8.x at the Gentoo database. And, finally, monolithic? I installed kdebase, not kdebase-meta. Do I have these backwards? Thanks a lot. |

KDE has it own version number, each part of KDE has it's own version, the versions of the parts aren't the same as for the whole KDE, this for programs may not be always upgraded when a new version of KDE is released and sometimes a new program is added and it has it's own version which could be 0.0.1 or even 10.0.100 if the program has been developed for a long time before added to KDE. Gentoo choose to use the KDE version for the meta packages, as it's easier to know what package belongs together with another one. This is the same way with version of Gentoo don't follow the kernel version, but has it's own version numbering. //Aho |
