Default re: font installation?

Ok from what I can see after new fonts get
extracted to the proper directory you make
the dir and scale files using a tool.
sometimes chkfontpath may be used after this
to complete the installation so all apps
may use fonts.

I have a gentoo installation with 2.4.20
kernel and cannot get xfontsel or gimp to
find fonts in freefont. It was emerged and
freefont dir contains the fonts.

I got type1inst script to create the scale
file etc but still no luck.
Funny, Abiword uses them
I have a feeling its related to the gentoo
equivallent of chkfontpath and global settings?

Suggestions or direction appreciated.
TIA
-Walt

Perhaps I spoke too quickly I may understand.
Could this be a case of old way vs new?
My Abiword 2.0 finding the fonts via fontconfig.
And other apps like gimp still needing a global
xset in a profile for the font path?

If this is the case perhaps everything will use
fontconfig soon?
