Hello Jeff,

I live in a windown free environment so I can't help you with your w2k/samba issues but I use the following setup
successfully:
2 printers called inkjet and laser connected to /dev/lp0 and /dev/lp1 on an old P100 called manuel
manuel runs lprng with one queue for each printer and simply spools in raw mode to the printers.
cupsd runs on my server called polly
On polly I have edited /etc/cups/cupsd.conf to allow connections from other clients and admins
New drivers, i.e. .PPD files need to be copied to /usr/share/cups/model/
You need to restart cupsd after you have copied new drivers.
My main workstation called basil also has cups installed.
On basil I only edited /etc/cups/client.conf and put the following line
ServerName polly
nothing else needed to be done on basil.
When configuring a new printer with the web interface I gave lpd://manuel/laser and lpd://manuel/inkjet
You would simply give /dev/lp0
That's it.

BTW, I also have a Dymo Turbo330 label printer connected via usb on polly, worked right from the first label.

HTH,
Xavier.

Me again,

I thought I'd point out that cupsd _does not_ run on basil.

Xavier,

Thank you for all the detailed information. I'm trying to more or less
reconstruct things as you've described. I'm concentrating on the
connection from apollo (gentoo machine with no printer) to zeus (gentoo
machine with printer). zeus is running the cupsd daemon. And following
your suggestion, I've turned off the cupsd daemon on apollo. Cups is, of
course installed on it. I've edited zeus's /etc/cups/client.conf so that
it reads: "ServerName zeus" (it used to be "ServerName 192.168.1.100"
which was zeus' IP address).

I'm a little unclear about what you've done in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf in
"polly". You say you enabled connections from other clients and admins.
Could you post the lines? Or better yet, could you just post the whole
file? I have a feeling that is where my problem is. I don't think its
listening to anything except itself, even though I have "port 631" set to
listen.

Thanks again,
-Jeff

Wow, I got it working between the Gentoo machines. I haven't exactly
figured out what was wrong yet. What I did was turn everything on that
could conceivably be turned on. That's a whole lot looser than I want to
leave it, but at least it's working.

Now, I need to start tightening it down until it breaks, and then I guess
I'll understand it better.

Thanks for the ideas.

-Jeff

Just out of curiosity, why don't you have cupsd running on the machine
hosting the printers? Seems like the downside of running raw lprng's on
them is that when you submit a job indirectly and then decide to kill it,
its already gone to the lprng spool and can't be stopped, or not as
easily.

Is there an advantage?

Just curious.

Jeff,

Glad you found your way.
Printers are attached to manuel because it has two // ports
and I think it is nice to have all printers attached to the same machine.
Why does it run lprng and not cupsd ?
Because it is a slow old P100. It took me a week to compile gentoo.
I did not want to compile cups, ghostscript,........
I do not want it to run anything too demanding like filters, converters, rasterizers,...
It does DNS, NTP, lprng, sshd
It will do firewall (eth0..2) whenever I really need it eventhough I do not like the same machine to act as printer
server and firewall. I might reconsider then.
What do I do whenever I need to kill a job ?
Most of the time the jobs have been sent to the printers and done.
Only bigger jobs could be killed and I know where to kill them. manuel.
Que?

Xavier.
