| Has anybody managed this? I'm asking in the Gentoo ng before posting in the Real community forums because a search reveals this isn't an issue over there. I need to run it as root because I need it to autoupdate - in order to download the Sony Atrac codec. Mplayer uses RealPlayer's Sony Atrac codec to play Sony Atrac files. (As a side-note: I'd be interested if anybody knows other Atrac codecs, not necessarily just for playing; it would be nice to encode Atrac files with Linux too.) -- Lee J. I installed Real One Player for Linux as a normal user and placed directory RealPlayer9 in my home directory (i.e, ~/) I just used Mozilla to play the BBC World News Video and was the able to use the Real One Player (i.e., ~/RealPlayer9/realplay) no problems except for selecting it as the default program when asked to save or open the .ram file. The BBC came though load and clear on 4 speakers and the video was fast and smooth. Best regards, Honorato Echavez |

I've never had problems with playback (whether installed as user or root). Now however, I'd like to stay with the version in the Portage tree so that it updates when updates are available...but I also need the Altrac codec which is only available via an autoupdate...so I'd also like to run realplay as root. Anybody know how to do that? -- Lee J. Moore http://cafe-society.com |
