Default Sparc installation network issue

I have decided to try Gentoo on my Sparc Ultra 2. I have not used Gentoo
before.

I am having a strange network problem during the install. I can ping just
fine(local and Internet), but I cannot otherwise access the network,
either local or Internet, so lynx, wget, etc, do not work. Name resolution
works OK, because ping works on names. I have an IP address, obtained via DHCP.
Ifconfig seems fine, eth0 is up and running. This problem exists both
before and after a chroot. I have properly set up resolv.conf.

I do have 2 NICs, one onboard and one card. Eth1 shows up in ifconfig, but
is not Up and RUNNING. Route indicates that eth0 is the default device,
and the gateway is correct.

I suppose I should try removing the NIC card, but I am wondering if
anyone else here has any ideas.
