vc and apm

Hi i have two questions -

1) if I do not put a name in /etc/hostname I get unknown_domain in the vc
login screen(i do not run X). if I put in a name, the computer hangs for a
wile and the displays, name.unknown_domain. My computer does not have a
domain name, just a name (eg. "mycomputer"), how can i change this message
???? (eg. so it just displays mycomputer and not mycomputer.unknown_domain
at the vc login)

2) my pc has problems with apic (running 2.6.3), so i have
disabled it in the kernel - I known that I can get the halt command to
power the computer off without using apic - but what options do i need to
set in the kernel to do this (part of the .config file would be great)
