| I get an error on boot about the x font server missing. Everything else seems to work ok so it it actually necessary at all? Can I just remove xfs from with rc-update, and can you explain to me in plain English what it actually does? Many thanks |

In XFree86 3.x it was the only way (afaik) to display TTF fonts. Since XFree86 4.x it's generally not needed unless you want to supply a network with a common set of fonts. It's safe to remove xfs from startup, just make sure you have all the font dirs listed in your xorg.conf . Hth, -- Ben M. |

Since X is big, I decided not to recompile it. Two questions. What changed the use variable? I do not recall installing or uninstalling anything font-related manually. What if I DID re-emerge it? Everything seems to work now. Thx |
