Like can I just > use my XF86Config file? in xorg instead of usng /etx/X11/XF86Config, you use /etx/X11/xorg.xonf... as far as im conserned, xorg actually uses the xf86config, if no xorg.conf exists, the two files might actually be the same. hope this helped a little... just use emerge xorg-x11 |

Dieter, what were your reasons to switch? I can think of things like - license issues - performance - features just beeing curious... Eggert |

AFAIK future versions of xfree will not be supported anymore by gentoo. i dont think there are more features or performance improvements in xorg yet. but it is nice beeing able to update using emerge on the long run.. |

Ok, but the decision not to support future xfree versions was driven by the licensing problem, AFAIK. Do you have 3d support enabled? Is there something like xorg-drm? Eggert |

As I recall, all I did to switch is emerge -C xfree and emerge xorg and the fonts (don't know if I had to, but it's easy enough) and then, since I have an nvidia card, re-emerged nvidia-kernel (don't know if I had to do that either, but again, it's easy enough). xorg uses my XF86Config file. xorg pretty much does everything xfree does. It does have a different font path, so that needs to be taken into account. There are a lot of different ways to set up fonts and X, so, exactly what you need to do to take care of that depends on the setup. You may need to change some paths if you have lots of fonts that you have installed with xfree (although, if you use the old XF86Config file, your font paths don't change if that is where they are listed) For me the switch to xorg was amazingly transparent. I will probably see what xorg can automatically generate as far as a new config file, when I get the time to mess around a bit, but it's really not necessary. -- jim |

| -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I decided to go from XFree to XOrg, not only because of licensing issues, but most of all because the development of XOrg seems to be going almost twice as fast as XFree. Because all the major GNU/Linux distributions now use XOrg, the motivation to develop XFree is gone and the project is in my eyes doomed. - -- tmb -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.5 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFBMbTT06iZGSnL3eQRAvR1AJ91Ktxinvfzy+mgaahSLJ FzHhxY4ACffDzZ VY2foGve8+02fo0vgqCC6jY= =rFhn -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- |

In the last week or so I have changed to Xorg. I now find that NWN runs much smother, only uses 40~50% cpu (compared to 100% with XFree) and there is little slowdown when I log into X from the laptop and run kde3.3 across the LAN while still running NWN. The last would have slowed the game down alot but now itīs hardly noticeable. Have others noticed vast improvements? Well done Xorg -- Charles Fryett www.discover-england.co.uk/ Now Playing: |
