Default Xine freezes

Xine won't play dvds. No error msgs, just gets stuck at "Using
libdvdcss version 1.2.9 for DVD access". In fact it freezes - I have
to ctl-alt-esc out. Disk light flashes briefly every 10 secs or so,
but nothing happens. Latest veersions of xine-lib, xine-ui and
libdvdcss. Any clues, guesses, pointers, etc. appreciated.

Using KDE? Have DVD / CD automount on Desktop? Run top and look at kded and
xine - have several listed? Kill'em ! I turned off those "features" on my
KDE 3.4.1 Desktop and have no more problems.

Use KDE, but no automount.

I discovered that once I kill xine, the cpu runs at 100%, and stays
there. If I try to mount the dvd, the cpu does the same. top shows no
process using 100%, or even close. This is weird.

Problem is with cdparanoi. It's trying to read the disk and detecting a
problem. Best way to fix it is run emerge -pv xine and see what flags are
enabled. Then edit /etc/portage/package.use to add/remove flags that may
be causing problems and rebuild.

As far as DVD playback goes, I stick with mplayer because it handles
everything I've thrown at it although I ended up having to figure out why
cdparanoi was causing problems.

Why would cdparanoia auto run when a dvd is inserted or xine is run?
That is weird.
