| Does 10g run on Windows Server 2000 SP3 (german) ? I had a slightly messed install over an existing 9i installation (which was probably my fault of not removing 9i cleanly) and after rebooting and doing an uninstall and reinstall again I got through with 2 glitches: 1. OCR gave an error (could not be installed or something) 2. ORACss services could not be started (service stayed in state 'starting') As a result of this installation on Windows Server 2000 the ORATNSListener process was not starting and gave an error that it could not be started when restarted manually in the services manager of Windows 2000. -- Chris Christoph P. I did a second installation on a totally different machine (Windows XP) which never got tainted by Oracle before and during the 10gSetup I got these two errors above. An OS error occured, contact your system administrator. (that was BS Fehler in german). Possibly a resource bottleneck. Not enough virtual memory? It is a 1GB Memory, dual processor PIII machine in this case. The other one failing (this morning) was a 512MB Athlon (FWIW). > > As a result of this installation on Windows Server 2000 the ORATNSListener > > process was not starting and gave an error that it could not be started > > when restarted manually in the services manager of Windows 2000. Gotta watch now about the listener process if that fails too. Will come back on this issue later. > > > > -- Chris Christoph P. U. Kukulies kukulies (at) rwth-aachen.de |

Could you be a bit more precise in your postings? Which of the above errors is the one you're refering to with 'this error is permanent'? And could you please recheck that what you wrote is what's actually happening? It might be my ignorance, but I've yet to come across OCR with regards to Oracle, could it be that it was CRS and that one you can safely ignore (except you plan to create a RAC Installation). > I did a second installation on a totally different machine (Windows XP) > which never got tainted by Oracle before and > during the 10gSetup I got these two errors above. I've got 10g crawling on a fairly small XP Box (P3-1GHz 384MB). It takes its time to start, but for certain educational purposes more than sufficient. > > > >>>As a result of this installation on Windows Server 2000 the ORATNSListener >>>process was not starting and gave an error that it could not be started >>>when restarted manually in the services manager of Windows 2000. > > > Gotta watch now about the listener process if that fails too. Maybe you find some clues in those files. HTH Holger |

Which of the above errors > is the one you're refering to with 'this error is permanent'? Sorry for being inprecise. I meant with "this error", both errors, the OCR installation error and the ORACss Service starting error. Both errors showed up on two different machines with the 10g .zip file of the 10.1.0.2 download area. Next time I do the install I will take screenshots. I would treat them as glitches. But probably crucial for the one who exactly wants to use these services. > And could you please recheck that what you wrote is what's actually > happening? Well, I can tell you you're wrong, because most people have never encountered such errors. I notice several other posts from you claiming that SYS can't run certain things in 10g that he could in 9i... that, too, is you and not a generically true observation. Whatever it is you're doing, pause, take a deep breath, read the installation documentation, and try again. For starters, please make sure you are not running DHCP. Regards HJR |

I'm running DHCP. Why shouldn't I ? Could that be causing the problems I have? Thanks. -- Chris Christoph P. U. Kukulies kukulies (at) rwth-aachen.de |

It specifically states not to in the installation documentation, and explains that if you are, you have to pretend not to by installing the Microsoft loopback adapter. It seems to me rather peculiar in any case to set up *servers* with DHCP, because there usually aren't many of them, and they tend not to come and go as the mood takes them. DHCP makes an awful lot of sense when you have lots of *client* machines to manage, connecting and disconnecting and re-connecting from the network as workers do their thing. In short, and in general, DHCP is not particularly suitable for *servers*. But regardless of the metaphysics behind that particular discussion, if you have DHCP, pretend you don't: visit www.microsoft.com and search for the phrase 'loopback adapter'. HJR |

So much so, indeed, that I have felt moved to place a networking FAQ now on my site regarding the matter (http://www.dizwell.com/html/dhcp.html) Regards HJR |
