| I run Oracle 10g on a Win 2003 server. I have backups going to one of the drives on my DB. I would like to copy those files to a tape for offsite storage. If I then had to restore the DB for any reason could I then restore those files from the tape and then restore the whole database? |

I don't use RMAN to backup them up to tape. I use veritas to take the backup files to tape. |

As long as you can restore them to the path you copied the RMAN generated files, there's no problem. If not, you'll have to fiddle with the RMAN location variables. - -- Regards, Frank van Bortel Top-posting is one way to shut me up... -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.1 (MingW32) iD8DBQFGTJ2CLw8L4IAs830RAh1tAJ9ulByPdUPC9L9R9WMZEJ 9iA6NqdwCfb9O4 Y/d2WbBf7Q6DwxDgPmk3VQQ= =SIMX -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- |

I have one other question also. If I want to practice restore functions in RMAN can I use those same backup files and restore to a new server and will that restore change any of my backups? In other words would i still be able to restore to my production server if needed? |

You can use the backup images to restore on another server assuming the backup pieces have the same fully-qualified pathname that was used on the production server. The restore operation will not change any of the backuppieces. Also, you could use RMAN backup backuppiece to make a copy of your backuppieces on disk to backup to Veritas (if you wanted). In a restore event, you then wouldn't need to restore the backuppiece to disk before RMAN could use it. |

That is recorded in the control file of the database you made a backup of, and RMAN will try to read it in case of a restore. In case your control file is lost, too, you obviously want to restore that from the backup, too (you do have control file autobackup set to ON, haven't you?) For the practice, look up RMAN CLONE commands - it will let you do just that: restore to another server, location or name, or any combination. - -- Regards, Frank van Bortel Top-posting is one way to shut me up... -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.1 (MingW32) iD8DBQFGTVzCLw8L4IAs830RAje/AJ9OUazqqnJcrq+paRGVexTDuoJ88ACfadHm amqCvphLy8aN0NdHsapXVq4= =cfCB -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- |
