Default Building a test server

I am planning to build a Oracle10G RDBMS "test" server to use while
learning and trying to understand more of 10G. This is a private
project what I will do at home.... So I have to build a server...
cheap.... What do you think I should use so you can work with the
system,.... there is no need fore high speed just a learning and
trying box....

I would like to run it with RED-HAT.....

What do you think?

Regards,
Johan Louwers.

Make sure you have 512mb of ram and at least 5gb free on disk. - you don't
absolutely need both of these but they'll make life easier.

Well, you don't specify *which* Red Hat, but as it's a home project,
presumably Advanced Server is out of the picture... in which case, go
with Red Hat 9 (if it's still available) or Fedora. Both work fine with
10g, and it's an easy install (though step-by-step instructions can be
found at www.dizwell.com -Faq, basic, Oracle on Linux).

For the machine, a couple of Gigabytes of free disk space, and at least
256MB of RAM are all you need.

I really struggled with a 10g db and dbconsole in 256mb ram - of course this
could be down to being grossly inept.

I bought a brand new budget pc (AMD 2.5Ghz, 0.5Gb, 40Gb 7200rpm hdd,
lan/wireless) for 350euro just for Oracle
and DB2 - I'm sure you can get cheap hardware like this anywhere ... and
most certainly in holland :-)
Threw SUSE on it, Oracle 10g, 9iR2, DB2 UDB and off we go ... and of course
we have Crossover office
running for MS Office and ultra edit (accept no substitute !!! ;-) )
This system is really wicked for it's price and good enough to play around
with ...
I also have a Pentium 233MMX (overclocked to 266Mhz) and 256Mb running with
red hat linux and Oracle 8i OPS (on one
node), Oracle 9iR1, Oracle IAS9iR2 and DB2 UDB - I use raw devices on this
one so 256Mb mem is not really a problem !

1st of all - you don't need to build a server; run it on
your existing computer.
2nd: if you insist on getting a server, get a cheap
offering (Aldi, serveral large computer shops), which
will get you running for less than 500 Eur.
Trade your screen for more memory, as mentioned before,
512 would be nice, 1G even nicer. Windows as well as Oracle
love memory. You should be done for about 400.

The cheapest solution would be to do it on your existing
one - perhaps add some memory?

Missed out on RH: 256M - 512M memory would be sufficient
to "de luxe"
