| Hi, I am running Windows XP SP1 With DHCP. And I had the following phenomenon with the installation of Oracle 10.1 and 10.2 Enterprise. On my laptop that already has Oracle 9.2 db, I installed 10.2.0.1 without any errors. Only to be surprised with the following problem: 1) When I log in using sqlplus "/ as sysdba" then it logs on correctly to the newly created database in 10G. 2) If I use sqlplus username/password@database_name then it fails with the error ORA-12518: TNS:listener could not hand off. 3) When I open the Home Selector, Oracle only sees the 9.2 home 4) TOAD also sees only one home. I uninstalled 9.2 and 10G. Cleaned registers and all Oracle folders, and started a fresh install of 10.2 only. When I finished I got the same result. TOAD fails to see anything and there is no Home Selector since there is only one home. After some more investigation, I decided to install 10.0.1 and see if this version works. I double checked the home location, options etc.. but the results were the same. So I went for the 9.2 installation, with this installation I got the Home Selector but it sees only the 9.2 Home. Then I installed 10.2.0 a second time ending me up with 4 Oracle Homes in the registers but only one ( 9i) visible to the Home Selector and TOAD fails also to see all 10G Homes. I have posted the fragment related to Oracle DBs of my registers also. Why 10G won't work on my computer ?? | (Have to admit I did not look at the complete listing you submitted ...) First question - is this XP Home or Pro? Second question - what happens when you stop the 9i Listener and just use the 10g Listener? (It can handle both database instances.) Remember to use the right port when doing that check. -- Hans Forbrich Canada-wide Oracle training and consulting mailto: Fuzzy.GreyBeard_at_gmail.com *** Top posting guarantees I will not respond further *** |

| Hi again, 1) I use Windows XP Pro SP1 2) Running one listener at a time: I tried running the 9i db with the 9i listener. All is ok running the 10g db with the 10g listener. Runs with problems as above mentioned I might have confused you with all these versions, but my final aim is to get one version of 10g version running from TOAD. I don't need the other versions. That is why I installed the listeners with the default parameters. I run only one listener at a time because they all operate on the same port. It was just installed to prove that an older version works well. regards Michal |

It is normally configured to handle all database instances, as the listener will only be involved at the very beginning of the connection and then will get out of the way after it has told the client and database instance which port to use for communication. The higher version listener will handle the lower version database instance, so running the 10g listener will allow access to the 9i and 10g database. (This assumes the base config has not been modified to disable that capability.) Variations on this, of course, are in the docco. -- Hans Forbrich Canada-wide Oracle training and consulting mailto: Fuzzy.GreyBeard_at_gmail.com *** Top posting guarantees I will not respond further *** |

I had problems with 10g and TOAD versions lower than 8.5, now i'm using 8.5 + Oracle 8i client + Oracle 9i client + Oracle 10g client all on the same workstation (Windows 2000 Professional) but in different Oracle homes of course. TOAD finds all homes and switching between them works fine. Matthias |
