| Hi All, Could a 10g RMAN catalog DB talk to different versions of oracle db? I mean, if I create a 10g RMAN catalog DB and then when I do RMAN backup. I have one oracle 8.1.7.4 db and one is oracle 9 db. I should be able to use the 10g RMAN catalog DB for both these 2 (8, 9) production databases for backup right? Thanks in advance, Dom |

| Hi Joel, Thanks a lot. You always help me and help other in the newsgroup. It is very nice of you. Actually, reading the newsgroup is very good to learn a lot of different things. Since a lot of time, certain situation and scenario is not happen on my own production db. So nice to hear what happen to others and see how they solve those problems. You are very GOOD (technically). Yeah, I have been trying very hard to learn 10g now. Since I have not worked as ORACLE production DBA for 2 years and a few months (some family thing). I just start working again in a pretty cool place(cool site, very high traffic though). DOM |

So you are a lady? I've been wondering since someone referred to you as "he." I usually think a name ending in a is feminine, but one can never tell with all the various naming conventions in the world, and of course I've been assigned email addresses like "joelga". > I just start working again in a pretty cool place(cool site, very high > traffic though). Very crazy in my work. Oh, I would like to ask you another thing: what is the best place to read about how to tune the following parameters: optimizer_index_cost_adj=?? optimizer_index_caching=?? undo_management=AUTO (????) undo_tablespace=undotbs2 undo_retention=1800 (???) undo_suppress_errors = FALSE pga_aggregate_target=25165824 (????) Basically what I am trying to is , to try to set the new parameters for 10g when I upgrade to 10g db from oracle 8. I am just setting it in a test instance. But still I need to know where I should read to find out what is the size of those parameter I need to use. I know there is a tool from oracle 10g upgrade that will do some recommendation on the parameter. I have NOT run it yet. Basically my site on a low day, there are 75 million executions per day. And if you look at my consistent gets. A lot of time, it is doing 8 or 10 million consistent gets per minute. Crazy , crazy. | > You do consulting too? Just curious. I've been calling myself a "database consultant" for many years. To me it's just words, but to the companies and government it makes a big difference. I'd rather just have a local regular job, but where I live the pay isn't high enough to live on. In general I find that 3 month contracts that don't specify specific deliverables somehow just keep going on for years. Sometimes I'll spend one or two days at a place, doing an installation or solving a specific issue, but for DBA work you really have to know a site, and that takes a while. The reality is companies bring in a consultant for a specific skill or task, and then keep them if they discover both competence and that there are more skills. But won't hire because the pigeonhole has a lower salary. (I've turned down some offers because, why do the same work for less money? And sometimes regret it.) I'm really stressed about it now because the wife and kids need lots of dental work. Not that it would have made a difference if I had dental benefits, most dental plans limit to way less than the cost. >what is the best place to read about >how to tune the following parameters I think Jonathan Lewis is coming out with a book about CBO tuning soon for which we have high expectations. | Hi Joel, Thanks for the book's information. I agree, most place pay the permanent DBA low salary and has to work very long hours... and has to be on-call. But the smart one(smart DBA usually dont' like to do that on-call restriction and long hours) usually will end up doing consulting job, and also like to solve strange/interesting problems. I also agree with you, it takes a while to know the site and understand the application a little bit to understand how to tune the database. Dominica |
