Default data type clarification urgent.....

hai there,
i am not able to use long data type completely in oracle 8i i am able
to use only 4000 bytes completely,is ther any configuration to be done
before using it.

1) long datatype works in 8i... post your code and the specific error in
order to get specific help
2) (netiquette) only post to one group
